Parley’s Ocean Uprise summits focus on the scientific and cultural understanding of marine environments and the co-creation of solutions with a world class line up of teachers and special guests in, on and around the ocean.

Our inaugural #OceanUprise Youth Summit took place in 2019 on the island of O’ahu in Hawai’i. Bringing selected young leaders from around the world together with ocean advocates, activists, surfers and scientists, the five day program will empower a global group of champions for our oceans and act as a blueprint for future events and actions.

After a blessing by Hawaiian Kahu @pohatu, participants dove into a packed program of ancient navigation and ancestral environmental wisdom with @hokuleacrew’s Nainoa Thompson and @imuakino, ocean immersion and stewardship with legends @captainpaulwatson, @gerglong, @missemilypenn, @kai_lenny, @zaniac1 and @kimi_swimmy, marine science innovations with Dr. @cliff_kapono, @christian_miller_photo and @oceanalliance’s Dr. Iain Kerr, plastic pollution with @instakahi, @garybencheghib, @davehakkens, @mikellongme, and @sambencheghib, the power of art with @pangeaseed, climate activism with @alexandriav2005, a remote coastline cleanup with @sustainablecoastlineshawaii and local marine ecosystems with @malama_pupukea_waimea.

In a series of workshops, participants explored campaigns, actions and solutions themed around Climate Change, Indigenous Communities, Overfishing and Plastic Pollution. On and under the waves, new connections were forged and we renewed our shared love of the oceans. This is just the beginning of the journey. In the coming months, we’ll continue to collaborate and share stories from this new global network of changemakers. Mahalo to everyone who took part and helped make this happen.

Please note that due to the ongoing pandemic the 2020 Summit was cancelled and our plans for 2021 remain under review
